Glucosamine hydrochloride is one of several forms of glucosamine. Glucosamine is an natural amino sugar and a prominent precursor in the biochemical synthesis of glycosylated proteins and lipids. Glucosamine is part of the structure of the polysaccharides chitosan and chitin. It is produced commercially by the hydrolysis of crustacean exoskeletons.
Glucosamine is a precursor for glycosaminoglycans, and glycosaminoglycans are a major component of joint cartilage, supplemental glucosamine may influence cartilage structure, and so may apply to alleviation of arthritis.
